Op de warmste zomerse dag van dit jaar hoorde ik voor het eerst het nummer Faraway Look van Yola. Ik werd overrompeld door de fantastische stem van deze Britse zangeres. Faraway Look is een ballad dat zo in de soundtrack van een James Bondpast. Een groots en meeslepend nummer. Het is zo’n lied dat je vaker achter elkaar kunt draaien zonder dat het verveelt.

Dan Auerbach ontdekte het talent van Yola. Vervolgens produceerde hij het debuutalbum Walk Through Fire van deze zangeres uit Bristol.
Het nummer Faraway Look is de opener van Yola’s album en meteen het hoogtepunt. Een ander nummer dat mij bekoort, is Rock Me Gently met folk invloeden. Het rijkelijk georkestreerd nummer Lonely The Night gaat over hartzeer. Het mooie van dit album dat de vocalen van Yola zo prominent aanwezig is. Daarentegen klinkt Walk Through Fire netjes en braaf.
Yola’s nummers zijn een mix tussen country en soul. Daartoe werd ze geïnspireerd door de platencollectie van haar moeder die veelal bestond uit Amerikaanse country van Dolly Parton, The Byrds en Emmylou Harris.
PHANTOM LIMB
Voordat dit album verscheen had Yolanda Quarty (Yola’s echte naam) al de nodige zang ervaring. Zo was ze lead zangeres van de band Phantom Limb. Deze groep bracht twee albums uit met nummers in het country soul genre. In The Pines uit 2012 is een lekker laid back album. Het is onduidelijk waarom de band een jaar later uit elkaar gaat.
Nog voor de periode van Phanton Limb zong Yolanda als achtergrond zangeres bij de triphop band Massive Attack.
Het is fijn dat Yola weer actief is. Met het nummer Faraway Look in het bijzonder geeft ze het country soul genre een impuls. Als ik dit nummer hoor, dan zal ik automatisch terug denken aan die hete zomerdag in 2019. Graag zou Yola graag eens live aan het werk zien met wat rauwere nummers. Ben zeer benieuwd of deze talentvolle zangeres echt bekend gaat worden.

Yola impresses on Faraway Look
On the hottest summer day of this year I heard the song Faraway Look by Yola for the first time I was overwhelmed by the fantastic voice of this British singer. Faraway Look is a ballad that would fit right in with the soundtrack of a James Bond film. A great and compelling song. It is one of those songs that you can play over and over again without getting bored.
Dan Auerbach discovered Yola’s talent. Then he produced the debut album Walk Through Fire by this singer from Bristol.
The song Faraway Look is the opener of Yola’s album and immediately the highlight. Another song that enchants me is Rock Me Gently with folk influences. The richly orchestrated song Lonely The Night is about heartbreak. The beauty of this album is that Yola’s vocals are so prominent. On the other hand, Walk Through Fire sounds clean and well behaved.
Yola’s songs are a mix between country and soul. She was inspired to do so by her mother’s record collection, which consisted mostly of American country by Dolly Parton, The Byrds and Emmylou Harris.
PHANTOM LIMB
Before this album was released, Yolanda Quarty (Yola’s real name) already had the necessary singing experience. She was the lead singer of the band Phantom Limb, which released two albums with songs in the country-soul genre. In The Pines from 2012 is a nice laid-back album. It is unclear why the band split up a year later.
Even before the period of Phanton Limb, Yolanda sang as a background singer with the triphop band Massive Attack.
It’s nice that Yola is active again. With the song Faraway Look in particular, she gives the country soul genre a boost. When I hear this song, I will automatically think back to that hot summer day in 2019. Would love to see Yola live at work with some rawer songs.
