MUZIEK VOOR ON THE ROAD

Als ik in de auto op de snelweg rijd, wil ik graag vlotte muziek horen die me het gevoel geeft  dat de reis lekker opschiet. Onderweg luister ik vaak naar de albums van Amerikaanse classic rock muzikanten zoals Southside Johnny, Bruce Springsteen en Tom Petty. Opgezweept door die muziek trap ik soms ongemerkt het gaspedaal dieper in.

Een artiest die in dit ‘on the road’ genre thuishoort, is John Mellencamp. Zijn album The Lonesome Jubilee hoor ik onderweg vaak en graag. WAAROM IS THE LONESOME JUBILEE EEN GOED ALBUM?

Ik hou van typisch Amerikaanse rock met gitaren, uitbundige zang en felle drums. Op The Lonesome Jubilee combineert Mellencamp de Amerikaanse rocksound met instrumenten als accordeon, banjo en viool. Deze rock-roots combi klinkt na ruim dertig jaar nog steeds fris en relevant. Catchy nummers als Paper In Fire, Check It Out en Cherry Bomb nodigen uit tot mee zingen.

De teksten zijn geëngageerd en gaan over de schaduwkanten van de American way of life. John is oprecht en sociaal bewust. Zo stelt hij de ongelijkheid en problemen van boeren aan de kaak. Hij wordt de Bruce Springsteen van het platteland genoemd. De muziek van JohnMellencamp heeft raakvlakken met die van The Boss. Toch heeft de muziek van John een afwijkend en eigen gezicht en geluid.

ALBUM HOES

Op de albumhoes zit John Mellencamp aan de bar van het Midway Cafe in Elnora, Indiana naast de 73-jarige lasser Woody Baker. De beroemdste rocker van Indiana verloochent zijn roots niet.

OORDEEL

The Lonesome Jubilee is een album met smaakvolle arrangementen dat lekker weg luistert. Dit jaar viert de plaat zijn 35^e verjaardag. Jammer dat op een paar nummers de teksten clichématig worden. Bijvoorbeeld in We are the people and we live forever en It’s hard times for an honest man, very very very hard times. Deze minpunten maken van The Lonesome Jubilee net geen meesterwerk.

In de Verenigde Staten is Mellencamp een gevierd artiest. In Europa is zijn populariteit een stuk minder. John toert niet vaak door Europa, zijn teksten zijn erg gericht op de VS en zijn muziek wordt hier niet gepromoot.

In de loop van de tijd is Mellencamp ’s muziek verschoven van rock naar roots. Zijn stem is  gruiziger geworden.

Ik vermaak me prima in de auto met The Lonesome Jubilee. Blijf stiekem de hoop houden dat John nog een keer de oceaan oversteekt voor een concert in Nederland. Zijn laatste was in Den Haag in 2011.

MUSIC FOR ON THE ROAD

When I’m driving on the highway in my car, I like to hear smooth music that makes me feel like the journey is progressing nicely. On the road, I often listen to the albums of American classic rock musicians such as Southside Johnny, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. Swept up by this music, I sometimes imperceptibly step on the gas pedal.

One artist who belongs to this “on the road” genre is John Mellencamp. His album The Lonesome Jubilee is one I love to hear on the road. It energizes me, puts me in a good mood and seems to cut down on travel time. Read the blog The Lonesome Jubilee by John Mellencamp is a forgotten album.

WHY IS THE LONESOME JUBILEE A GOOD ALBUM?

I like typical American rock with guitars, exuberant vocals and fierce drums. On The Lonesome Jubilee, Mellencamp combines the American rock sound with instruments like accordion, banjo and violin. This rock-roots combo still sounds fresh and relevant after more than thirty years. Catchy songs like Paper In Fire, Check It Out and Cherry Bomb invites you to sing along.

The lyrics are committed and deal with the dark side of the American way of life. John is sincere and socially conscious. For example, he denounces inequality and the problems of farmers. He has been called the Bruce Springsteen of the countryside. John Mellencamp’s music has similarities to that of The Boss. Yet John’s music has a different and distinctive face and sound.

On the album cover, John Mellencamp sits at the bar of the Midway Cafe in Elnora, Indiana next to 73-year-old welder Woody Baker. Indiana’s most famous rocker does not deny his roots.

VERDICT

The Lonesome Jubilee is an album with tasteful arrangements that. This year, the album celebrates its 35th anniversary. It’s a pity that in a few songs the lyrics become clichéd. For example in We are the people and we live forever and It’s hard times for an honest man, very very hard times. These drawbacks make The Lonesome Jubilee just short of a masterpiece.

In the United States, Mellencamp is a celebrated artist. In Europe, his popularity is a lot less. John doesn’t tour Europe often, his lyrics are very US-centric and his music is not promoted here.

Over time, Mellencamp’s music has shifted from rock to roots. His voice has become grittier.

I’m having a great time in the car with The Lonesome Jubilee. I keep secretly hoping that John will cross the ocean again for a concert in the Netherlands. His last one was in The Hague in 2011.
