Verbaasd over het succes

“We have some friends in the front, thank you very much. I think we got some friends all over the field. Thank you. More than we expected! Maybe we should live here. Thanks a lot.“

Het zijn de verbaasde woorden van de zanger van de onbekende Ierse band U2 tijdens het Pinkpop optreden uit 1981. Het publiek reageert enthousiast op de muziek van deze piepjonge band.

Eerder roept zanger Bono al uit: “You’re not supposed to know who we are!” Daarna wordt de single I Will Follow ingezet.

Pinkpop

Voor de tweede keer bezoek ik het Pinkpop festival. Op die zonnige Tweede Pinksterdag in 1981 sta ik in de rij op het veld van het Burgemeester Damenpark in Geleen om drankjes te halen. Ik hoor de muziek van een band met de aparte naam U2 (spreek uit jooee too). Dat klinkt goed met dat open gitaargeluid en de zang. Wat een mooie stem heeft die zanger, zegt mijn toenmalige vriendin als ik terug kom met een tray gerstenat. U2 staat als tweede band geprogrammeerd en daarna treden onder meer Fischer Z, UB 40 en Ian Dury op.

Cassettebandje

De concerten van Pinkpop werden in die tijd in zijn geheel uitgezonden op de radio. Ik nam alle Pinkpop optredens op van de radio. Wat heeft deze band U2 een geweldige sound en wat zijn ze onbevangen. Met het superieure spel van gitarist The Edge, de strakke ritme sectie en de ontwapenende zang van Bono Vox. En ik hoor prachtige nummers van die enthousiaste band: I Will Follow, 11 O’Clock Tick Tock, Out Of Control  en Another Another Place. I Will Follow wordt in het toegift nog een keer gespeeld. Het piepjonge kwartet heeft één album uit en een beperkt repertoire.

U2 is voor mij de nieuwe muzikale ontdekking van deze Pinkpop. De new wave band straalt hoop uit. Ze onderscheiden zich daarmee van tijdgenoten als The Cure en Joy Division, die respectievelijk een gothic en donker imago hebben.

Het cassettebandje van dit U2 concert heb ik misschien wel 100 keren gehoord. Ik heb het  letterlijk stuk gedraaid, totdat de tape brak.

Gage

Het verhaal gaat dat Pinkpop baas Jan Smeets € 2723 heeft betaald voor het U2 optreden. Jan Smeets heeft altijd de hoop gehad dat U2 nog een keer terug zou komen als headliner van het festival. Maar dat was niet haalbaar en daardoor wishful thinking.

Mega band

Na Pinkpop ging het hard met U2. In korte tijd groeide het Ierse kwartet uit tot een mega band met hoge album verkopen en stadion concerten. De vier jongens uit Dublin werden mannen met de charismatische zanger Bono, de gitarist The Edge en het solide tandem Adam Clayton (bassist) en Larry Mullen (drummer).

Op die Pinkpop maandag had ik niet door dat ik getuige was geweest van een memorabel optreden van een band die zou wereldwijd uitgroeien tot één van de bekendste acts.

Surprised of the success

“We have some friends in the front, thank you very much. I think we got some friends all over the field. Thank you. More than we expected! Maybe we should live here. Thanks a lot.”

These are the surprised words of the singer of the unknown Irish band U2 during the 1981 Pinkpop performance. The audience reacts enthusiastically to the music of this very young band.

Earlier, singer Bono exclaims: “You’re not supposed to know who we are!” Afterwards, the single I Will Follow is deployed.

Pinkpop

For the second time, I visit the Pinkpop festival. On that sunny Whit Monday in 1981, I stand in line on the field of the Burgemeester Damenpark in Geleen to get drinks. I hear the music of a band with the unusual name U2 (pronounced jooee too). It sounds good with that open guitar sound and the vocals. What a beautiful voice that singer has, says my ex girlfriend when I come back with a tray of beer. U2 is programmed as the second band and after that Fischer Z, UB 40 and Ian Dury perform, among others.

Cassette Tape

In those days, the Pinkpop concerts were broadcast in their entirety on the radio. I recorded all Pinkpop performances from the radio. What a great sound this band U2 has and how  open-minded they are. With the superior playing of guitarist The Edge, the tight rhythm section and the disarming vocals of Bono Vox. And I hear great songs from that enthusiastic band: I Will Follow, 11 O’Clock Tick Tock, Out Of Control and Another Another Place. I Will Follow is played one more time in the encore. The very young quartet has released one album and a limited repertoire.

U2 is for me the new musical discovery of this Pinkpop. The new wave band radiates hope. They distinguish themselves from contemporaries such as The Cure and Joy Division, who have a gothic and dark image respectively.

I have heard the cassette tape of this U2 concert perhaps 100 times. I literally played the tape until it broke.

Gage

The story goes that Pinkpop boss Jan Smeets paid €2723 for the U2 performance. Jan Smeets had always hoped that U2 would return one more time as headliner of the festival. But that was not feasible and therefore wishful thinking.

Mega band

After Pinkpop things went fast for U2. In a short time, the Irish quartet grew into a mega band with high album sales and stadium concerts. The four boys from Dublin became men with the charismatic singer Bono, the guitarist The Edge and the solid tandem Adam Clayton (bassist) and Larry Mullen (drummer).

On that Pinkpop Monday I didn’t realize that I had witnessed a memorable performance by a band that would become one of the most famous acts worldwide.
