Bijna 10 jaar na het verschijnen van het album In Colour van Jamie xx is de opvolger In Waves uitgekomen. Een plaat waarmee muzikant, dj en producer Jamie xx de elektronische muziekscene opnieuw op scherp stelt. In Waves is meer dan een verzameling van tracks. Een droomstart met gelaagde producties
De openingstrack Wanna is een dromerige ballad die naadloos overgaat in de upbeat Treat Each Other Right. Deze track vermengt klassieke funk met futuristische UK Garage (een moderne elektronische muziekstijl). Het nummer combineert deze twee zeer verschillende muziekstijlen, wat een contrast creëert tussen oud en nieuw, traditioneel en modern. De twee eerste nummers zetten daarmee direct de toon voor een album dat voortdurend inspeelt op tegenstellingen.
Collaboraties die schitteren
De kracht van Jamie xx ligt in het samenwerken met anderen. De gastenlijst op In Waves is indrukwekkend te noemen. Eén van de hoogtepunten is de samenwerking met de Australische band The Avalanches in het nummer All You Children. In Waited All Night dragen Romy en Oliver Sim bij, waardoor de band The xx weer in de complete bezetting is.
In Baddy on the Floor haalt de iconische Honey Dijon erbij voor een gospel-house-knaller, zonder twijfel de meest energieke track van het geheel. Op de afsluitende track Falling Together bevat spoken word bijdragen van de Ierse danseres en choreograaf Oona Doherty.
Een emotionele reis
In Waves voelt als een lange clubnacht. Jamie xx neemt de luisteraar mee op een muzikale reis, waarbij hij moeiteloos schakelt tussen garage, house en disco. Een hoogtepunt is het opzwepende Life, een samenwerking met de Zweedse zangeres Robyn die het midden houdt tussen melancholie en euforie. Het laat zien dat Jamie xx niet alleen goed is in het maken van beats, maar ook in het samenbrengen van verschillende artiesten en stijlen tot een mooi golvend geheel.

Review: In Waves by Jamie xx – A Nightclub Experience
Almost 10 years after Jamie xx’s album In Colour was released, the follow-up In Waves was released. With this record musician, DJ and producer Jamie xx is again challenging the electronic music scene. In Waves is more than a collection of tracks. It is an ode to club life including nostalgic nods to the 1990s.
A Dream Start with Layered Productions
Opening track Wanna is a dreamy ballad that flows seamlessly into the upbeat Treat Each Other Right. This track mixes classic funk with futuristic UK Garage (a modern electronic music style). The song combines these two very different musical styles, contrasting old and new, traditional and contemporary. The first two tracks thus immediately set the tone for an album that constantly plays on contrasts.
Collaborations That Shine
Jamie xx’s strength lies in collaborating with others. The guest list on In Waves can be called impressive. One of the highlights is the collaboration with Australian band The Avalanches on the song All You Children. In Waited All Night, Romy and Oliver Sim contribute, bringing The xx back in its full line-up.
