Blog over de Britse new wave band The Sound. Over hoe ik ze leerde kennen, de vergeten klassieker From The Lion’s Mouth van The Sound en hun frontman Adrian Borland die op een tragische manier overleed.

THE SOUND OP HET ZOMERPARKFEEST IN VENLO
Op een mooie zomeravond in het begin van de jaren ’80 speelde de Britse new wave band The Sound op het hoofdpodium van het gezellige Zomerparkfeest in Venlo. Ik kende hun muziek nog niet. De nieuwsgierigheid werd gewekt door een recensie in Muziekkrant Oor, mijn muzikale kompas. Op het podium zag ik een gedreven, hechte band en hun muziek knetterde. De zanger-gitarist Adrian Borland leek heel boos te zijn op alles en iedereen. Die intense donkere sound van bas en drums vermengd met felle gitaarlijnen en het geluid van de synthesizer maakten indruk.
DE SOMBERE JAREN ‘80
Het is muziek in het doemgenre die thuishoort bij bands als Echo and the Bunnymen, U2, The Cure, The Doors en Joy Division / New Order. De new wave muziek past in de tijdsgeest van de vroege jaren ’80. Een sombere periode met een hoge jeugdwerkloosheid, de dreiging van kernwapens en de economische malaise.
FROM THE LION’S MOUTH IS EEN VERGETEN KLASSIEKER
Ik ben naar From The Lion’s Mouth gaan luisteren. Het tweede album van The Sound boeit van het openingsnummer Winning tot het laatste nummer New Dark Age. Winning is het krachtige openingsnummer en het hoogtepunt van het album. Andere uitschieters zijn Sense of Air, Skeleton, Silent Air en New Dark Age. Het album klinkt na zelfs bijna 40 jaar nog steeds relevant.
Uit deze tekstfragmenten blijkt dat Adrian Borland worstelt met het leven.

CULT BAND
Het blijft gissen waarom The Sound niet doorbrak. Het grote publiek vond de nummers te veel op elkaar lijken. Latere albums zijn te wisselvallig en missen de samenhang en sfeer die From The Lion’s Mouth wel heeft. Waar vergelijkbare bands als U2 en The Cure het clubcircuit ontgroeiden en grote acts werden, bleef The Sound een cultband. Ze bleven in de kleinere concertzalen spelen en de sprong naar grotere zalen maakte The Sound niet. Frontman Adrian Borland miste het charisma van Bono (U2) of Robert Smith (The Cure). Daarnaast had de zanger en gitarist psychische problemen en was het moeilijk om met hem samen te werken.
ADRIAN BORLAND
De Londense band was in Nederland populairder dan in de UK. Adrian Borland heeft periodes in Nederland gewoond. Gefrustreerd door het uitblijven van succes viel The Sound in 1987 uit elkaar. Borland kon het niet verkroppen dat een band als U2 door het grote publiek werd omarmd en The Sound niet.
Na het uiteenvallen van The Sound startte hij een solocarrière en bleef songs schrijven en optreden.
Het is doodzonde dat Adrian in 1999 uit het leven is gestapt. The Sound en Adrian Borland hebben mooie nummers gemaakt met From The Lion’s Mouth als het muzikale hoogtepunt.
Gelukkig kan ik naar dit album luisteren en koester ik de herinneringen aan het concert op het Zomerparkfeest.

From The Lion’s Mouth from The Sound is a forgotten classic album
THE ZOMERPARKFEEST CONCERT
On a beautiful summer evening in the early 80s, the British new wave band The Sound played on the main stage of the pleasant Zomerpark festival in Venlo. I didn’t know their music yet. The curiosity was aroused by a review in Muziekkrant Oor, my musical compass. On stage I saw a driven, tight band and their music crackled. Singer-guitarist Adrian Borland seemed to be very angry at everything and everyone. That intense dark sound of bass and drums mixed with fierce guitar lines and the sound of the synthesizer was impressive.
GLOOMY 80s
It is music in the doom genre that belongs to bands like Echo and the Bunnymen, U2, The Cure, The Doors and Joy Division / New Order. The new wave music fits in the time of the early 80s. A gloomy period with high youth unemployment, the threat of nuclear weapons and economic malaise.
FROM THE LION’S MOUTH IS A MASTERPIECE
I started listening to From The Lion’s Mouth. The Sound’s second album captivates from the opening track Winning to the final track New Dark Age. Winning is the powerful opening track and the highlight of the album. Other good numbers are Sense of Air, Skeleton, Silent Air and New Dark Age. The album still sounds relevant after almost 40 years.
These lyrics show that Adrian Borland is struggling with life.

CULT BAND
It remains a mystery why The Sound didn’t breakthrough. The general public found the songs too similar. Later albums are too inconsistent and lack the cohesion and atmosphere that From The Lion’s Mouth does. Whereas similar bands like U2 and The Cure outgrew the club circuit and became big acts, The Sound remained a cult band. They kept playing in the same music clubs. Frontman Adrian Borland lacked the charisma of Bono (U2) or Robert Smith (The Cure). In addition, the singer and guitarist had psychological problems and it was difficult to work with him.
ADRIAN BORLAND
The London band was more popular in the Netherlands than in the UK. Adrian Borland lived in the Netherlands for periods. Frustrated by the lack of success, The Sound fell apart in 1987. Borland could not cope with the fact that a band like U2 was embraced by the general public, while The Sound was not.
After the breakup of The Sound, he started a solo career and continued writing songs and performing.
It is a great pity that Adrian left this life in 1999. The Sound and Adrian Borland have made beautiful songs with From The Lion’s Mouth as the musical highlight.
Fortunately I can listen to this album and I cherish the memories of the concert at the Zomerparkfestival.
